Story of a class room
“Prevention is better than cure” came to life during our science lesson in September. With rain leaving pools of water, mosquitoes were abundant, giving us a chance to study their lifecycle by observing larvae in class. But learning about mosquito-borne diseases sparked a stronger motivation: we wanted to protect our community from these threats.were scared. We read that mosquitoes kill more people than any other animal or insect.Every minute one child is dying because of malaria. To add to our worry,we heard about many incidents of malaria and dengue fever in the community.
Gradually, fear and anxiety shifted to a strong desire to solve the problem. We brainstormed ideas like using bed nets, installing window screens, covering water tanks, and eliminating stagnant water. To organize, we conducted a survey and grouped solutions into three categories: “Keep Mosquitoes Away,” “Control Breeding,” and “Use Mosquito Repellents.” Teams researched each area, discovering that many households use chemical repellents, which can harm children. Instead, we suggested natural repellents, like a mix of lemon and cloves, to keep mosquitoes away safely.
They also went to the near by market to understand the cost for fixing window screens. We then prepared a detailed plan for implementing our ideas. We prepared pamphlets and posters .Organised awareness campaign and distributed pamphlets in the schooland community.
The idea of “Lemon and Cloves”was well accepted by all.But fixing window screens was thought of asexpensive and therefore not well received. We came back to our discussion table and then the idea of using“mosquito net as window screen”cameup. We collected old mosquito nets and demonstrated its use as window screen. We also organised cleanliness drive in the community
